WORSHIP IN SPIRIT & IN TRUTH
My, Devotion to Him #6
VERSE PASSAGE: John 4:23-24 "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” - NIV
Man dwells primarily in the physical and emotional realm, but God is a Spirit. To have true fellowship with God, we have to relate to God on the spiritual level. In order to make this possible, God changed our spirit. At salvation, our spirit became totally new (1 Cor. 5:17). It is now righteous and truly holy (Eph. 4:24). It is now exactly the way Jesus is, because our born again spirit is the spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ.
VERSE PASSAGE: Romans 8:9 "You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ." - NIV
In our spirits we are worthy to come before God and worship Him without any fear. Our spirit is the only part of us that is worthy. That's why we must worship Him in spirit and in truth. When we come before God dwelling on all our failures and problems, we are not approaching Him through our spirit. Our spirit is not our problem. Our born again spirit is perfect. There is a place for mentioning our problems and failures but it's not the part of us that has been saved and is in fellowship with God. We must always base our relationship with the Father on who we are in our spirit through Christ Jesus, and the new us since salvation. Remember the old is gone, the new has come.
True worship must be “in spirit,” that is, engaging the whole heart. Unless there’s a real passion for God, there is no worship in spirit. At the same time, worship must be “in truth,” that is, properly informed. Unless we have knowledge of the God we worship, there is no worship in truth. Both are necessary for satisfying and God honoring worship. Spirit without truth leads to a shallow, overly emotional experience that could be compared to a high. As soon as the emotion is over, when everything settles, so does the worship. Truth without spirit can result in a dry, passionless encounter that can easily lead to a form of joyless legalism. The best combination of both aspects of worship results in a joyous appreciation of God informed by Scripture. The more we know about God, the more we appreciate Him. The more we appreciate, the deeper our worship. The deeper our worship, the more God is glorified.
1. God is a spirit, we need to worship Him in spirit.
2. God gave us spiritual access to Him after salvation.
3. We have been made totally new creations because of salvation.
4. Do not base yourself on who you were. Remember the old has gone the new has come.
5. Getting into the word helps us understand God and helps us worship Him in a deeper way.
