VERSE PASSAGE: John 4:1-3 "Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee." - NIV
This passage of scripture is interesting to me. Because if we look on the surface it looks like Jesus left because He was scared. The problem with this passage is to many times people will look at a verse and make an assumption right off the bat. This is human nature we look at a title on a devotional, book, movie, song and automatically conjure up something in our mind to make sense of it. We have look at people and start making first impression judgement's on them by their appearance. We look at their clothes, posture, hair style, check to see if there are any visible tattoos and piercings once we have seen this we start making small comments in our head about these people. What type of people they probably are, what they are most likely into, how they live. We do all of this on a first time impression. The most important thing we don't look at is that person's heart. We don't look on the inside to make a judgement we look at how they look on the outside for us to make a decision about them. This is a common in when we hear stories like this one. lets read this over.
Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had to come know what Jesus was doing. What His ministry was doing. Once hearing this Jesus left. As we read it did not say Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard what He was doing and Jesus stayed in Judea for a while longer. It was once He learned of this that He left. Now, we could start out by saying "wow! Jesus is running scared. There was going to be confrontation in the city and Jesus left." however, we do not read on from there to learn that there was a bigger plan in motion we would miss if we just left everything right here.
VERSE PASSAGE: John 4:4-7 "Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” - NIV
You see Jesus did not run away from the problem. He did not run away from a fight. He did not run away because He was overwhelmed and scared and needed to find a safe place. This was the will of God the Father! There was a plan in motion and once Jesus learned that the Pharisees had learned what Jesus was doing. Jesus left. This was His cue to leave. Not because of what would happen if He would stay but if He would leave at that precise time Jesus would come to a town called Sychar. And as the disciples went into town to get food, Jesus would rest at Jacobs well. While He was there a woman would come to draw water.
It was going to be inevitable that Jesus and the Pharisees would cross paths and on more than one occasion. However, it was going to be on Gods time frame. You see by Jesus leaving at that precise time He would come to rest at the well and during Him waiting at the well a woman would come to the well also. And the story of Jesus and the woman at the well could now take place.
If Jesus had left sooner or later this amazing story wouldn't have taken place. If He had stayed like so many of us have stated that we would've this woman's life and the many people living in that town would've stayed in the same position.
I'm so amazed by our Father in Heaven. He has a plan in everything we do. His time frame is so perfect. Why? because at the precise time when we obey Him and follow in the plan He has laid out for us. We have the chance to ministry to other people. We have the chance to change people's live's. How? By talking to them about Christ the Lord.
So many people have learned of potential confrontation and they stay in the city and want to fight. They want to stand up for themselves. They don't want to be seen as someone who runs away because they are scared. If we would come into prayer with God and align ourselves to Him and follow His plans no matter if He calls us to leave the city. Trust in Him, follow Him. Because His plan is so precise and perfect. He might have you leave the city in which case you might have the chance to ministry to someone about the goodness of God and change someones life forever.
Remember Jesus was the most selfless person who ever walked the earth. He did not come for Himself. He did not come to show off to everyone His glory and force people to bow and worship. He came for you, for me, for your friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor. He in humility being born into this world as we all are. As a baby. In His humility and Humbleness He was seen by some as being weak or lesser of a man than others. But in truth, He showed the greatest amount of love possible. Not love for Himself. But love for a lost and dying world. In His willingness to suffer we were saved. In His willingness to leave the city He found a lost life and change her future forever.
God has a plan and a time frame in which things will come to pass. Be steadfast in prayer and ever willing to hear His voice and follow His command.
Jesus in His Humility, Humbleness, and Willingness to die for us. We were sparred hell.
